Ten Principles That Shape Every Movement

01

01

Lift the crown of the head

The head is held as if gently suspended from above, giving the spine natural length and a quiet lightness to the whole posture.

02

Sink the shoulders, lower the elbows

Space opens through the upper body. The arms hang with the ease of a branch, not the effort of a lever.

03

Hollow the chest, round the back

The breath is guided down to the dantian rather than held high; the chest is left to soften, not puff outward.

04

Relax the waist, move from the centre

The waist works like the body's motor — every turn of the hand or step of the foot is driven from here.

05

Distinguish empty from full

Weight is never split evenly by habit. Knowing which leg carries the body is what gives the form its stability.

06

Use intent, not force

The mind leads and the body follows. Power drawn from tension is exchanged, over years, for power drawn from intent.

07

Unite the upper and lower body

Hand, waist and foot move as a single connected chain, so a shift in the stance is always visible in the hands.

08

Match the inner and the outer

What the body shows should agree with what the mind is doing — a calm posture with a scattered mind is only half the practice.

09

Practise without interruption

One posture flows into the next with no pause and no seam — an unbroken thread from the opening move to the close.

10

Seek stillness within movement

Even as the body travels through the form, the mind stays settled at its centre, calm and unhurried.

These ten points are taught gradually, one grade at a time, at Mariams Tai-Chi Chuan Academy — second generation Yang style, affiliated with the World Yong Nian Tai-Chi Federation.

Ji (極) vs Qi (氣) — What's the Difference?

極

Ji — the Ultimate Principle

Tai (太) plus Ji (極) forms the philosophical term Taiji (太極) — the "Supreme Ultimate," the point from which Yin and Yang are said to emerge in Chinese philosophy.

氣

Qi — Vital Energy

The life force said to flow through the body. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Qigong and Tai-Chi practice, correct training is held to bring this flow into balance.

01
